Acacia fiber, a prebiotic fiber for a healthier tomorrow!

Alland & Robert guarantees a minimum fibre content of 90% for all products of its range “Acacia Fibre“. Organic, Fair for Life, FODMAP-friendly and other certifications are available upon request.

ACACIA GUM, RECOGNIZED AS A DIETARY FIBER

In Europe, acacia gum has long been recognized as a fiber. Nutrition claims are applicable for acacia gum: either “source of fiber” or “high in fiber”, depending on the dosage*.

In the United States, acacia gum can be classified as a fibre for nutrition labelling purposes since December 2021. This decision from the FDA has allowed acacia gum to count as a dietary fibre on American Nutrition and Supplement Facts labels.

Strong scientific literature demonstrates that Acacia gum is a fibre. The FDA  has agreed that acacia gum has physiological effects beneficial to human health, such as the reduction of blood glucose and insulin levels after it is eaten with a meal containing a carbohydrate that raises blood glucose levels.

ACACIA GUM, A NATURAL, VEGETAL & SAFE SOLUTION FOR THE FORMULATION OF FOOD & DRINKS, WITH A POSITIVE IMPACT ON DIGESTIVE HEALTH

A study commissioned by Alland & Robert from an independent consumer research organization established the positive impact of acacia gum on gut health and digestive wellness. In recent years, the gastrointestinal (GI) system has been linked to numerous aspects of health.  Alland & Robert decided to research to role acacia gum can play in gut health, evaluate the impact of acacia gum on consumers who suffer from intestinal disorders regularly and provide scientific data  that support the use of acacia gum as a gut health agent.

Did you know that the addition of acacia gum can help to improve the Nutri Score of food products ? Our research has shown that acacia gum can support the creation of healthier food products and help improve their nutritional information and labelling.

THE FODMAP-FRIENDLY CERTIFICATION

The FODMAP-friendly certification is designed to enable people with symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) who are following a low-FODMAP diet to easily identify suitable food products. FODMAP stands for Fermentable by colonic bacteria, Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols.

Acacia gum has low FODMAP content, making it an ideal ingredient for people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome as well as other digestive disorders. It can be used to formulate products compatible with a low-FODMAP diet – it is rich in prebiotic fibre and helps improve intestinal transit and reinforce good gut bacteria.

HOW TO REFORMULATE PRODUCTS : THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF GUM ACACIA

Gum acacia can be used as an ingredient in food formulations to help improve certain aspects that contribute to a better Nutri-Score. Here are a few:

REDUCED FAT CONTENT: Acacia gum can be used as a fat substitute in certain food applications, such as dressings, sauces, and baked goods. It helps compensate the effects of the reduction of fat content in a formulation with acacia gum. The overall fat content and caloric density of the product can be reduced, which can lead to a better Nutri-Score.

FIBER ENRICHMENT: Acacia gum is a dietary prebiotic fiber that can be added to food products to increase their fiber content, which is one of the factors considered in the Nutri-Score calculation. Higher fiber content is associated with a healthier nutritional profile.

SUGAR REDUCTION: Acacia gum has adhesive properties and can be used as a binding agent or stabilizer in food products such as nutritional bars, to make all ingredients stick together. It will also enhance the sweetness or flavor of a product, which makes it possible to reduce the amount of added sugars used to achieve desired texture and mouthfeel, without compromising taste. Lower sugar content can result in an improved Nutri-Score.

CALORIE REDUCTION: Acacia gum has a relatively low caloric content compared to other ingredients used in food processing. By replacing higher-calorie ingredients with acacia gum, food products can achieve calorie reduction, which can positively impact the Nutri-Score.

Alland & Robert celebrates SDG Flag Day 2024

On September 25, 2024, Alland & Robert is proud and excited to raise the flag of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)! We show our support to the SDGs and we are happy to show that we are part of this global movement for a better world.

SDG Flag Day is an international initiative launched by the Global Compact. Member companies all raise a flag to symbolize their commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on 25th September, 2024. Alland & Robert is excited to raise awareness about the 2030 agenda and 17 SDGs. Adopted in September 2015 by 193 countries at the United Nations, the SDGs represent an action plan for peace, planet and prosperity.

Today is a good time to shine a light on the concrete initiatives Alland & Robert and our Corporate Foundation have created over the last few years to make our commitments a reality in countries where our natural gums are harvested:

  • – Planting over 15,000 trees between 2020 and 2023 and protecting 155 hectares of land in partnership with NGO TreeAid
  • – Taking actions to address the biological and social risks associated with the acacia gum supply chain by partnering with NGO Traffic and “We Use Wild” initiative, including signing the We Use Wild pledge
  • – Getting our products certified Fair For Life – we’re the first company in the acacia gum supply chain to do this!
  • – Focusing on the local communities through the Foundation and our work with our local suppliers

Since 2024, Alland & Robert has reinforced its commitments to sustainability and responsible business practices by becoming part of the Global Compact initiative. We have become  part of a community of over 2,500 member organizations in 160 countries that drive positive change.

The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact address the fundamental responsibilities of business in the areas of human rights, international labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption.

Inspired by landmark UN declarations and conventions, they act as a normative authority for responsible business. By integrating the Ten Principles into strategies, policies and procedures, and establishing a culture of integrity, businesses not only meet their fundamental responsibilities to people and the planet, but also set the stage for long-term success.

At Alland & Robert, we create awareness and act in support of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, that seek to address the world’s biggest challenges, including ending poverty, improving health and education, and tackling climate change. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that each Goal and target are achieved by 2030. In alignment with its operations and stakeholders, Alland & Robert has prioritized seven SDGs where we can make a particular contribution.

All reporting by Alland & Robert on the SDG is available in the Alland & Robert CSR report 2024 that can be downloaded on our website.

This announcement is part of Alland & Robert strategy to lead the gum acacia industry in sustainability and ethics. We are taking responsibillity for crafting and communicating a clear vision for a sustainable future and an ethical industry. This involves setting ambitious, achievable goals and developing comprehensive strategies to reach them.

We work hard to ensure that our organization remains at the forefront of sustainability and durability, which is why ESG agency EcoVadis recently awarded us a Gold medal for our CSR performance.

BEYOND ACACIA®

Alland & Robert’s new Beyond Acacia® range is the fruit of over two years of research and development, with the aim of meeting market expectations and combining environmental exemplarity with technological excellence. The Beyond Acacia® range brings high-density granulometry to the table, enabling the creation of an innovative and sustainable range of gums.

This new range also showcases Alland & Robert’s commitments to the environment: The transformation used to make high-density granules produces a much lower volume of carbon emissions. The Beyond Acacia® range enables direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by 51.1% (scopes 1 + 2), and a reduction by 13.5% of emissions upstream and downstream in the value chain (scope 3).

Moreover, the Beyond Acacia® range’s improved solubility and dispersion capacity enables a reduction in energy use during the end user’s industrial process, as their production phase will require less time and energy to complete. The granules dissolve completely without being heated, even at high levels of concentration. The range new granularity ensures excellent hydration properties (superior to those of a standard gum), which maximize the efficiency of the dispersion process. The occurrence of foam during this process is reduced, as are quantities of particles, which also improves fluidity and reduces the occurrence of lumps. With Beyond Acacia®, the volume of acacia gum required to obtain a net weight of 100 grams is 32% lower than with an instant acacia gum, bringing additional carbon reductions in packaging, freight, storage and waste.

TASTE SAMPLES MANUFACTURED WITH SYNDEO® GELLING

Finding plant-based substitutes to non-vegan gelling agents  can be a challenge if you’re looking for that perfect texture, sensory experience, hardness or resilience. During Food Ingredients Europe, come to our booth and taste vegan samples such as gummies, formulated with Syndeo® Gelling.

Composed of 100% natural and plant-based hydrocolloids and acacia gum, Syndeo® Gelling is ideal to substitute gelatin or other gelling agents in vegan formulations. Syndeo® Gelling offers a choice alternative for vegan candy recipes, mousses and healthy food supplements such as “gummies”. The combination of Syndeo® Gelling ingredients, 100% plant-based hydrocolloids, provides a compromise between gelatin and pectin. While gelatin provides high elasticity and reduced stickiness, pectin helps achieve firmer, stickier textures with little or even no elasticity. Syndeo® Gelling offers both low hardness and higher elasticity than pectin, without creating any stickiness.

Syndeo® Gelling offers a choice alternative for vegan candy recipes and health food supplements. This market, currently booming, is not immune to the quest for healthier products. Whether it is to adopt a vegetarian diet, out of concern for the environment, to combat intensive farming, or out of religious conviction, an increasing number of consumers are looking for products formulated with plant-based ingredients to substitute those of animal origin. This is one of the challenges facing the food industry, and in particular manufacturers of confectionery. Syndeo® Gelling provides an innovative and multifunctional solution.

Gum acacia receives FODMAP-friendly certification

The FODMAP-friendly certification is designed to enable people with symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) who are following a low-FODMAP diet to easily identify suitable food products.

FODMAP stands for Fermentable by colonic bacteria, Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols

These carbohydrates present in certain foods are absorbed slowly (or not at all) by the intestine. As a result, they help increase the water content of stools and encourage the production of gas by bacteria in the microbiota.

It is estimated that 5-10% of the worldwide population has IBS. Most persons with IBS are under the age of 50, but many older adults suffer as well. International scientists now recommend a low FODMAP diet for people suffering from intestinal disorders such as IBS.

OUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTH & HIGH QUALITY

These certifications demonstrate our commitment to health and quality. Alland & Robert focuses on developing natural gum ranges that have high nutritional value, help improve the nutrition of consumers, lower their glycemic index and have a positive impact on gut health.
Alland & Robert products are also designed to answer specific nutrition needs such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, keto, no -gelatin or low-FODMAP diets. Alland & Robert works to explore all the possibilities of gum acacia by carrying out research, hand in hand with all industrial sectors, in a virtuous model for the planet and humans alike.

Consumers security, high quality and safety are Alland & Robert’s utmost priority. We are focused on providing healthy, natural and nutritionally-good solutions to our clients, in order to promote health and safety to consumers worldwide.

Alland & Robert raises awareness among consumers about the environmental, social and nutritional impacts of their purchasing decisions. Alland & Robert’s applied research strategy is consistent with the company general long-term vision of offering natural, plant-based and low-carbon solutions for healthier and more sustainable diets. Application developments are focused on the functional, nutritional and health aspects of gum acacia. Our low-FODMAP certification for gum acacia opens avenues of research into themanagement of the irritable bowel syndrome. Trends such as sugar reduction, digestive health, and lowering the glycemic index are at the heart of Alland & Robert’s research.

Corporate Foundation Alland: Activity report 2023

Alland & Robert’s Corporate Foundation has released its 2023 activity report.

Alland & Robert created its Corporate Fondation in 2021 to strengthen its commitments in Africa and in countries where natural gums are harvested. The purpose of this foundation is to support and monitor various projects in the countries where Alland & Robert operate, and more generally, on the African continent.

2023 marks the third year of existence of the Foundation.

It is also the beginning of  the support to emergency projects in Sudan to respond the acute needs arising from the military conflict that broke out in April 2023.

In 2024, the support projects will be extended to child protection and food security to provide humanitarian aid and relief to Sudanese populations who are in Sudan or who are seeking refuge at the Chad border.

In 2023, the Corporate Foundation supported projects in 8 African countries:

Sudan, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Niger and Central African Republic, with a focus on 2 main areas:

    > Supporting local communities : Alland & Robert’s business activity led the company to operate in rural areas of Africa, where trees grow naturally. In gum harvesting areas of the Sahel, the quality of life can be threatened by desertification of land, drought or lack of access to services. The Corporate Foundation Alland concentrates its efforts on supporting the communities living in these harvesting areas, and on helping people lifting themselves out of poverty.

    > Preserving the environment and biodiversity:   Natural gum harvesting areas border the African Sahel desert. These areas are particularly affected by global warming and are prone to desertification due to the practice of cutting down trees for cooking and firewood. The Corporate Foundation Alland actively fights for the preservation of trees. We lead initiatives to protect local species in their native environment and to fight against desertification and climate change. We also work with the Great Green Wall to help restore degraded lands. These projects are initiated and created thanks to the know-how of Alland & Robert, which has over 138 years of expertise in natural gums and partnerships with African communities.
