Gut-friendly prebiotic fiber
In Europe, acacia gum has long been recognised as fibre. The nutritional claims “source of fibre” or “high in fibre” can be used with acacia gum depending on the amount of fibre.
In the United States, acacia gum has been classified as a fibre for nutrition labelling purposes since December 2021. This decision from the FDA means that acacia gum counts as a dietary fibre on American nutrition and supplement fact labels.
This decision is backed by extensive scientific research demonstrating that acacia gum is good for our health, including reducing blood glucose and insulin levels when eaten with a meal containing a carbohydrate that increases blood glucose levels.
Natural, plant-based, safe solution for formulating food & drinks with a positive impact on digestive health
A study commissioned by Alland & Robert established the positive impact of acacia gum on gut health and digestive wellness.
In recent years, the gastrointestinal (GI) system has been linked to numerous aspects of health. Alland & Robert therefore decided to dive deeper into its role in gut health and impact on consumers who suffer from intestinal disorders.
FODMAP-friendly certification
FODMAP-friendly certification enables people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms following a low-FODMAP diet to easily identify suitable food products. FODMAP stands for “fermentable by colonic bacteria, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols”.
Acacia gum has low FODMAP content, making it an ideal ingredient for anyone suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, as well as other digestive disorders. It can be used to formulate products compatible with a low-FODMAP diet – it’s rich in prebiotic fibre and helps improve intestinal transit and reinforce good gut bacteria.
Reformulating products to harness the positive impact of acacia fibre
Acacia Fibre can be used as an ingredient in food formulations to contribute to a more balanced nutritional profile – and better Nutri-Score.
Reduce fat: acacia gum can be used as a fat substitute in certain food applications, such as dressings, sauces and baked goods. The overall fat content and caloric density can be reduced.
Add fibre: acacia gum is a prebiotic fibre that can be added to food products to increase their fibre content, one of the factors contributing to the Nutri-Score. Higher fibre content is associated with a healthier nutritional profile.
Reduce sugar: acacia gum has adhesive properties and can be used as a binding agent and stabiliser in food products, such as nutrition bars, to make all the ingredients stick together. It also enhances sweetness and flavour, enabling manufacturers to reduce the amount of added sugar while still achieving the desired texture, mouthfeel and taste.
Reduce calories: acacia gum has fewer calories than many other ingredients used in food processing. Replacing higher-calorie ingredients with acacia gum can positively impact the product’s nutritional profile.
